hello , jace heer, i was wondering why in the makeing of the viking sword the fuller was ground & not forged into shape? thank you for any answers ahead of time.
While I can’t speak for the smith himself, Niels, I’m assuming the fullers were ground in simply because he didn’t have fullers dies.
Another possible reason is to show off the pattern welding. If he were to forge the fuller into the blade, then when the blade is ground and cleaned up it wont show Quite the variety compared to cutting into the pattern to expose it that way instead. Much to be said for the forging the fullers, as it does make for a stronger blade overall, or, it Can.
But showing the pattern welding would be one explanation that makes some sense.
